Kai Cup Memorial Race 

Screaming O Sailing and Trans Northland are collaborating to fundraise and honor a Duluth community member this September.

Kai Hoenig needs little introduction to the sailing community. On the water since they were young, Kai had been involved with the DYC for the majority of their life. Kai was one of the kindest people on the water and would be the first to volunteer when work needed to be done. Whether it was climbing the mast to install a new wind vane, diagnosing gremlins in the autopilot, or getting sails on deck when the rest of the crew was too sick from sea state (and the night before) Kai was always there. 

September 12th and 13th, 2025 the DYC and Trans Northland are holding a memorial event in honor of Kai and all that they gave to the community. 

Friday September 12th at Earth Rider Fest Grounds starting at 6:00pm there will be a social, raffle, live music, and fundraiser for Trans Northland, a community organization dedicated to providing support to the Transgender community in Duluth, Superior, and the surrounding region. 

Saturday September 13th: The First Annual Kai Cup Memorial Race, radio call/skippers meeting at 10:15am. First start is at 11:00am.

The race will be similar to the inshore triangle, course to be announced during the radio call. 

Register here on this form, entry fee is $50 to be paid here. Registration will be complete when payment is recieved. Each boat will have an option to buy up their PHRF. Each additional $25 will buy up your boat's PHRF by 3 seconds per mile.

Saturday September 13th at The Caddy Shack Bar and Grill there will be a social at 3:30 and awards starting at 5:00pm.

All race fees and money raised will go directly to Trans Northland and their effort to continue to support our local Trans Community.
