Notice of Race

DYC 2019 Nearshore Races

The Duluth Yacht Club (DYC) will sponsor Nearshore Races as listed in the 2019 Race Schedule as published in the Leading Edge, and online at the DYC website at: Sailing Instructions are published in the Leading Edge and on the DYC website.


1.1 Racing will be governed by the 2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), including the US Sailing Prescriptions, and the Sailing Instructions or as announced on VHF 72 and/or posted on the DYC website. The race committee is not obligated to post changes to notices on the website.

1.2 Racing rule 40 will be changed as specified in the Sailing Instructions and requires each crew member to wear a PFD at the start and finish of the race. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in the yacht scoring a DSQ for that race.

1.3 Racing rule 52 will be changed as specified in the Sailing Instructions to allow electronic autopilots .

1.4 APPENDIX A, SCORING will be changed so that boats that DNS, DNF, or DSQ will be scored one (1) plus the number of finishers. The number of discards will be determined by the Race Committee.


2.1 The yacht owner or designated representative must use the DYC website,, to complete online race registration and pay all required fees prior to racing. Additionally, in order to race, the yacht must have a current PHRF rating from the DYC Ratings Committee or be in compliance with applicable one-design class rules if racing in a one-design class.

2.2 Prior to racing, all yachts must obtain and provide proof of insurance to the Race Committee showing adequate liability insurance in full force and effect during racing which shall include a general liability policy written by a responsible insurance company insuring the owner and any operators against liability for bodily injury.

2.3 At least one individual holding family or individual membership in the DYC shall be on board a yacht while competing. Visiting yachts must have on board one member in good standing with a recognized yacht club affiliated with US Sailing or ISAF.

2.4 By participating, all participants agree to be bound by the RSS and all other rules that govern the event.


3.1 The Race Committee will determine classes for the Nearshore Race Series.

3.2 Bermuda Starts will be used for all DYC Nearshore Races and are listed on the Bermuda Start Listing.


4.1 The DYC Race Schedule is published in the Leading Edge and is available at the DYC website.


5.1 The sailing instructions are available in the DYC Leading Edge and on the DYC website.


6.1 The race area is Lake Superior and the Duluth-Superior Harbor within approximately 10 miles of the Duluth Shipping Chanel. A race area map is available in DYC Leading Edge and on the DYC website.


7.1 Prizes will be awarded which shall not violate the amateur standards of the US Sailing Association or the U.S. Olympic Committee.


8.1 Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.
